Police assure Kenyans of security ahead of Thursday’s by-elections

The spokesperson also assured Kenyans that the police will enforce the law fairly, even as he urged for calm and for voters to collaborate with IEBC officials throughout the exercise.

Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyagah has assured Kenyans of security as they participate in Thursday's by-elections across various counties in the country.

In a statement to newsrooms, Nyagah said the National Police Service (NPS) is working closely with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as per the law.

"In the upcoming by-elections on November 27, 2025, the NPS reiterates its unwavering commitment to executing its duties impartially, professionally, and in strict adherence to the Constitution, to facilitate a peaceful, free, fair, and credible electoral process. The public is assured that adequate security shall be deployed for the attainment of the set objective," he said.

He further asked all political leaders to be respectful and cooperate with the electoral officials so as to deliver a credible and accountable exercise.

"The NPS recognises the vital role of vibrant political discourse in our democracy. Nevertheless, all political actors are urged- regardless of their affiliation- to conduct their activities within the confines of the law. Moreover, all political leaders are specifically called upon to desist from utterances that are inciteful to violence or bear hatred of whatever form. They should further refrain from making statements that could be interpreted as threatening or defamatory, or that undermine public confidence in our institutions," he added.

The spokesperson also assured Kenyans that the police will enforce the law fairly, even as he urged for calm and for voters to collaborate with IEBC officials throughout the exercise.

He said the officials should be allowed to go about their daily activities without fear and in the knowledge that their security is assured.

"In line with our mandate, the NPS states unequivocally that the law will be applied fairly and consistently to all individuals without fear, favour, prejudice, or bias. Any person who, regardless of status or political standing, engages in or incites unlawful activity will face the full force of the law. Police officers will act with utmost professionalism and respect the rights of all persons. Alongside other criminal justice agencies, the NPS shall make sure perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted," he added.

All suspicious activities should be reported to the NPS emergency hotlines: 999, 911, 112, or anonymously via #FichuakwaDci on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

"The National Police Service reaffirms its steadfast commitment to upholding the Constitution and to maintaining operational independence, impartiality, and political neutrality in its duty of service," the statement affirmed.
